How to Unblock a Number on iPhone (Step-by-Step)

You blocked a number on your iPhone — maybe it was a spam caller, an ex, or just someone you needed a break from. Now you want to undo it. Whether you changed your mind, blocked someone by accident, or realized the number belongs to a legitimate contact, unblocking a number on iPhone takes less than a minute.

This guide covers every method: from Settings, from Recent Calls, and from Messages. It also explains what happens after you unblock and how to troubleshoot if the unblock does not seem to work.

How to Unblock a Number from Settings

This is the most reliable method because it shows your complete blocked list in one place.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap Phone.

Step 3: Tap Blocked Contacts. You will see a list of every number and contact you have blocked.

Step 4: Find the number you want to unblock. Swipe left on it and tap Unblock. Alternatively, tap Edit in the top-right corner, then tap the red minus icon next to the number and confirm by tapping Unblock.

The number is immediately unblocked. There is no confirmation dialog and no delay — calls and messages from that number will come through right away.

How to Unblock a Number from Recent Calls

If the blocked number recently called you (even while blocked, it may appear in your Recents depending on your iOS version), you can unblock it directly from the call log.

Step 1: Open the Phone app.

Step 2: Tap the Recents tab at the bottom.

Step 3: Find the number you want to unblock and tap the (info) icon to the right of it.

Step 4: Scroll to the bottom of the contact card. If the number is currently blocked, you will see Unblock this Caller in red text. Tap it.

This method only works if the number appears in your Recents. If it does not, use the Settings method above.

How to Unblock a Number from Messages

If you blocked someone and they had previously sent you text messages, you can unblock from the Messages app.

Step 1: Open the Messages app.

Step 2: Find the conversation thread with the blocked contact. If the thread was deleted, this method will not work — use Settings instead.

Step 3: Tap the contact name or number at the top of the conversation.

Step 4: Tap the (info) icon.

Step 5: Scroll down and tap Unblock this Caller.

This unblocks the number for calls, messages, and FaceTime simultaneously — blocking and unblocking on iPhone applies across all communication channels, not just the one you used to block or unblock.

How to Check Your Blocked Numbers List

If you are not sure whether a specific number is blocked, or you want to review everyone you have blocked, the complete list lives in one place:

For phone calls: Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts.

For messages: Settings → Messages → Blocked Contacts.

For FaceTime: Settings → FaceTime → Blocked Contacts.

All three lists show the same blocked numbers — iPhone maintains a single unified block list that applies across Phone, Messages, and FaceTime. Checking any one of these three locations shows the full list.

If a number does not appear on the blocked list but the person says they cannot reach you, the issue may be something else — Do Not Disturb, Silence Unknown Callers, or a carrier-level block. See the troubleshooting section below.

What Happens When You Unblock Someone?

Several things change immediately when you unblock a number:

Calls come through normally. The unblocked number will ring your phone as usual. If you have Silence Unknown Callers enabled and the number is not in your contacts, it may still be silenced — but that is a separate setting, not a block. See our guide on what No Caller ID means for more on how Silence Unknown Callers works.

Text messages resume. New messages from the unblocked number will appear in your Messages app. However, messages sent while the number was blocked are not delivered retroactively. Any texts the person sent during the blocked period are permanently lost — they were rejected at the carrier level and cannot be recovered. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of iPhone blocking.

FaceTime calls come through. FaceTime calls from the unblocked number will ring normally.

Voicemails become visible. While blocked, voicemails from the number were stored in a separate "Blocked Messages" section at the bottom of the Voicemail tab. After unblocking, new voicemails appear in the normal voicemail list. Previously blocked voicemails remain in the Blocked Messages section until you manually check them.

No notification is sent. The person you unblocked does not receive any notification that they have been unblocked (just as they did not receive a notification when they were blocked). From their perspective, their calls simply start going through again.

Troubleshooting: Number Still Seems Blocked After Unblocking

If you have unblocked a number but calls or messages still are not coming through, check these common causes:

Silence Unknown Callers is on

If the unblocked number is not in your Contacts, and you have Silence Unknown Callers enabled (Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers), their calls will go directly to voicemail even though they are not blocked. The solution is to add the number to your Contacts or temporarily disable Silence Unknown Callers.

Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode is active

Check Control Center — if a Focus mode (Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work, etc.) is active and configured to only allow calls from certain contacts, the unblocked number may be silenced by the Focus filter. Go to Settings → Focus → [active mode] → People → check that the contact is allowed through.

Carrier-level blocking

If you used your carrier's spam-blocking tool (T-Mobile Scam Shield, AT&T ActiveArmor, Verizon Call Filter) to block the number, that block is separate from iPhone's built-in block list. Unblocking in iPhone Settings does not affect carrier-level blocks. Open your carrier's app and check its blocked/filtered list separately.

Third-party app blocking

If you use Truecaller, Hiya, RoboKiller, or another call-blocking app, those apps maintain their own block lists independent of iOS. Check the app's settings to ensure the number is not on its list.

The other person blocked you

If your calls to the unblocked number go straight to voicemail and your texts show no delivery confirmation, the issue may be on their end — they may have blocked your number. For more on recognizing the signs, see our guide on how to tell if someone blocked your number.

Network or iMessage issues

Occasionally, unblocking does not immediately sync across Apple's servers. Restart your iPhone after unblocking to force a refresh. If the issue persists with iMessage specifically, toggling iMessage off and on (Settings → Messages → iMessage) can resolve delivery issues.
